The Winter Classic is a tribute that celebrates hockey's beginnings on frozen lakes, rivers and ponds. Our initial research phase delved into DC and the Nat's ballpark where the game was to be played. We looked at iconic monuments and architecture. We eventually found a great link to both DC and a time period that coincided with with early National Hockey League development. The classic print-based campaign branding using stars and vertical bars went back as far as 1908. Herbert Hoover's 1928 campaign firmly established a look that lasted decades. The signature look was expanded in FDR's campaigns, and eventually with John Kennedy and beyond. Below is a small collection of our branding and development process.
The 2015 Winter Classic was a huge success, and a great victory for the Capitals. The energy around the entire stadium was absolutely electric. Seeing the Winter Classic branded Nationals Park, from massive decor, apparel, programs to every imaginable licensed product right down to the seat cushions, was amazing!
