2015 NHL All-Star Game | Columbus

While initially cancelled due to the 2013 NHL lockout, the All-Star Game was eventually brought back to Columbus in 2015. This particular event logo was a celebration of the host team, the Columbus Blue Jackets, and the state of Ohio overall. The state’s flag is featured proudly arching over the custom display typeface and military-themed crossed hockey sticks and star. The addition assets including in the program rely heavily on these unique letterforms and metallic stars and sticks, a nod to the historic Blue Jackets.

2014 NHL Heritage Classic | Vancouver

Once again NHL’s outdoor event embraces the heritage of the sport. Inspirations for the design work included historic Canadian Pacific Railway posters and shield, the Vancouver City seal, and the bannering from Vancouver’s police seal. The theme art program included a landscape pattern of the city, mountains, and sky leading to the distinctive retractable roof of the BC Place. Our custom Heritage Classic typeface was also evolved from the 2011 program we designed for Calgary.

As with most destination special events, a site survey prepares us to develop a branding program that reflects the geography, architecture, culture, and influences that should inform the program in a way that will resonate with both local and visiting fans. The Peace Tower was much more than a tourist spectacle -- it actually provided a visual reference point from all over the city. The Rideau Canal also proved to be such an integral part of life in the city that daily ice depth measurements are reported for specific sites all along the canal on morning radio throughout the winter season. Searchlights in the night sky near the canal also shed valuable inspiration that would influence the theme art package. Blend all of this together, and you have our uniquely Canadian Ottawa All-Star Game branding program.
